Too LowAbout this run
The Cal Salmon (California's Salmon River, not to be confused with Idaho's) is a gem of the Klamath Mountains — a steep, technical Class IV-V run through pristine wilderness on the northern edge of the Marble Mountain Wilderness. The river drops through continuous boulder gardens, narrow chutes, and several significant falls, all framed by Douglas fir forest and serpentine rock outcroppings. The Salmon is spring-dependent, running its best in April and May, and the window can close quickly. Those who time it right get one of the finest technical runs in the state.
Known Hazards
- Bloomer Falls — Class V waterfall, mandatory portage on river right
- Last Chance Rapid — Class V, serious hydraulic, careful scout required
- Spring season only — flows drop dramatically after June snowmelt ends
- Remote location — cell service is nonexistent in the canyon
