Too LowAbout this run
Castle Creek is Aspen's backyard creeking run — a steep, technical descent from the ghost town of Ashcroft down to the Roaring Fork confluence near Aspen. At optimal flows it's a demanding Class IV-V creek with continuous gradient, tight moves between boulders, and the spectacular backdrop of the Elk Mountains' fourteeners looming overhead. It's a short run but it packs serious technical challenge into every drop. Local kayakers hit it on spring mornings before work when the snowmelt peaks.
Known Hazards
- Very short season — runnable window is typically 2-4 weeks in late May
- Multiple Class V drops in the upper canyon require confident creek skills
- Wood debris is common — downed trees can block the entire channel
- Remote upper sections — difficult self-rescue, limited road access from Ashcroft
