Crystal River

Low OptimalAbout this run
The Crystal River descends from the Elk Mountains through Marble — the same town that quarried the stone for the Lincoln Memorial — and carves a stunning canyon past the ghost town of Crystal and its famous mill. The river is tight, technical, and beautiful. Class IV drops arrive in quick succession through a narrow canyon of white marble bedrock and dark metamorphic rock. Snowmelt from the Raggeds keeps it running through late June, and the brief window when flows are optimal is some of the finest creek-boating in the state.
Known Hazards
- Crystal Mill section — very technical Class IV, tight moves between marble boulders
- Short season — flows typically peak in late May and drop to unrunnable by mid-July
- Remote upper canyon — no road access for several miles above Marble
- Marble bedrock is extremely slippery for portages and scouting
