Deschutes River — Maupin Section

Too LowAbout this run
The Deschutes is Oregon's great high-desert river — a dam-controlled gem that flows consistently through canyon country of basalt columns, sagebrush, and golden hills. The Maupin section, from Harpham Flat to Maupin, is the most popular stretch: classic Class III wave trains, playful holes, and the iconic Wapinitia Rapid make this an ideal step-up run or a confidence-building trip for intermediate paddlers. The Deschutes runs strong year-round thanks to upstream regulation, making it a reliable destination when other Oregon rivers are running too high or too low.
Known Hazards
- Wapinitia Rapid (Class III+) — biggest drop, can flip open boats at high water
- Oak Springs Rapid — Class III, technical line at lower flows
- Fishing pressure — yield to anglers in designated fishing zones
- Afternoon wind in the canyon can make flatwater sections slow and uncomfortable
