Too LowAbout this run
The Lochsa is Idaho's great spring flood — a 50-mile corridor of continuous Class III-IV rapids tucked along US-12 in the Bitterroot Mountains. Snowmelt from the Clearwater Range turns this wilderness river into one of the country's best sustained high-volume runs from April through June. The gradient is relentless, the scenery is roadless wilderness, and nearly every bend brings another wave train or technical rapid. The Lochsa demands high-water skills and solid bracing — but rewards paddlers with mile after mile of world-class whitewater.
Known Hazards
- Lochsa Falls — Class V, mandatory portage, scout carefully before approach
- High volume above 10,000 CFS creates keeper hydraulics throughout
- 50-mile corridor means committing to the run — no easy bailout points
- Cold late-spring water (45-50°F) — dry suit mandatory
