High WaterAbout this run
The Selway may be the most coveted river permit in the country. With only one launch per day allowed at Selway Falls, this 47-mile wilderness float through the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is profoundly rare. The river combines serious Class IV-V whitewater with scenery and solitude that is simply unavailable anywhere else at this scale. Moose wade in the shallows. Eagles nest on the canyon walls. And the river, unconstrained by roads or dams, runs exactly as it has for millennia.
Known Hazards
- Selway Falls — Class VI mandatory portage, long and technical carry
- One launch per day permit — apply through lottery, extremely competitive
- Wilderness setting means multi-day self-sufficiency is required
- Water levels can change dramatically day to day in early season
