Too LowAbout this run
The Taylor punches out of Taylor Park Reservoir and drops through a series of tight, technical Class IV rapids before mellowing near Almont. This is a dam-controlled run, which means consistent flows when much of Colorado is too high or too low — a rare luxury on a Front Range trip. The canyon is intimate and beautiful, with spruce forests and granite boulders framing each rapid. It's a short run but it packs technical difficulty into every mile.
Known Hazards
- Dam releases can spike flow rapidly — check Taylor Park Reservoir releases
- Several undercut boulders in the upper canyon
- Rock gardens below 200 CFS become scratchy and technical
- Almont confluence area — watch for boat traffic on busy weekends
